Ground Speed PTO

On the older MFs there is a ground-speed PTO option (in addition to engine-speed). What types of implements was ground speed PTO used for? I have not run across many tractors that have it.

The ground speed is great for 'unclogging' implements also. Put in ground speed, back up gently until the clog can be safely removed.

The Fergie 25, 3 point, rake is a very handy rake in small fields. Works best with the ground speed PTO. Engine speed PTO is too fast.

I use for reversing stuck post hole digger. Jack left rear wheel up, put tractor in ground speed and reverse, hold right wheel brake down and unscrew auger.

In ground drive the PTO sliding gear is meshed with a gear on ring and pinion gear set. So, when reverse is used, ground drive PTO will be reversed also.

My 165 has live PTO. I use the ground speed for the 3 pt hay rake (old Ferguson A20), the tedder, and the pto manure spreader. My 175 has independent pto and it is difficult to get the right combination of engine speed and ground speed for work those implements properly.

(quoted from post at 16:55:48 09/03/20) Interesting. I will have to try ground speed for tedder and PTO spreader. Thanks

I tried Kuhn PTO 3pt tedder on ground speed and it turned too slow (5 MPH), almost made a windrow rather than spreading the hay out.

After mowing with the haybine (NI 290) I use a 2 star Tonutti 250 with the MF 165 in 1st high at about 1200 rpm and drive between two windows inorder to spread on the clear area between. Depending on the size of the windrows I will then generally combine two into one with the rake. The NH 276 seems to like that the best.
I have used the tedder on regular PTO speed but it seems just too aggressive.
