engine speed PTO not working

I have a 1963 MF35 gasser. This morning, I was going to use my bush hog and cut my power line. The engine speed PTO would not engage. I tried several times, engaging, disengaging the clutch and PTO with no change. I tried going from enginee to ground and back. turned the tractor off, back on and still no engine speed PTO. The ground speed PTO does work as normal. the last time I used the engine speed PTO it worked fine. I am not aware of any changes that might cause this.
anyone have any ideas where to start?

Are you saying that the gears grind when you try to shift the PTO into engine drive, or does it shift in but the shaft doesn't turn?

The last time I used it, the gears would grind when I engaged the engine speed PTO. But it engaged and worked. This time, I would move the engine speed lever up while having the clutch fully engaged. Nothing-no grinding, no shaft movement, no noise or resistance. I engaged the clutch fully and pushed the PTO lever all the way down, engaging the ground speed PTO with no grinding and no resistance. The PTO worked fine on ground speed. I bush hogged for 45 minutes with no problem. when I finished, I tried again to engage engine speed PTO and the same thing happened-nothing.
It seems like the lever is moving, but there is some type of linkage or shift mechanism that is not connecting.

There is a round cover by your left heel as you sit on the tractor. That is where the PTO lever is. Drain enough oil so you can remove that cover and take a look. Sounds like something could be broken there.

I changed the oil recently-I added 8 gallons-do you have any idea how much I need to drain to get below the level of the cover? Where can I see a picture of what's behind the cover. I have looked at all of my manuals and they don't have that picture.

Probably need to drain 3 gallons or so, or drain it all and be sure. I don't have a picture handy either. You may see something obvious when you take that cover off.
 
1963 MF 35 Diesel ...been in my family since new...
Replace HYD pump.......as per pictures....

I'm a little confused-are you thinking that the hydraulic pump needs to be replaced?
I will check and see if the lever has been moved, but I don't think it would work for ground speed if it had moved??
From the pictures and notes, it seems that the exterior lever moves a geared shaft backwards and forwards to engage either the ground or engine speed-is that correct?
My tractor is the deluxe model with dual clutch-but I don't think that makes any difference in this case.
Also, where can I find the manual that is pictured? The manual I have is a Service ManualFor Massey Ferguson MF35(USA),MF 50 MH50 and Ferguson TO35 . Manual # MH_MF35-50+_SV from Yesterday's Tractor. It does not address this problem as far as I can tell.

That is basically correct. It is actually a coupler that connects the PTO shaft to the output shaft of the pump. My thought is that something is broken or badly worn where the lever and coupler contact each other.

Sounds similar to what happened to my tractor. The cover plate through which the PTO lever passes actually cracked. It allowed enough slop that the "finger" jumped out of the groove for the engagement gear/spline.

It leaked a little hyd. oil, once I unbolted it, the whole lever fell out of the cover. New one fixed the issue.

When I down loaded the pics......the pics with the pump should NOT have ben included..

I had a similar scenario on my MF 35....the arm that moves the gear was not positioned properly..

I entered the PART NUMBER that is visible on the picture of the service manual on the internet,a used service manual was available on e-bay.

DRAIN all OIL from the common oil sump of your Tractor,(Trans,HYD,DIFF)remove plate with PTO engaging lever, view the inner workings of your GROUND / ENGINE driven PTO as per parts book / picture..
