Leaking Hydraulic cylinder in MF35 additional info

the lift cylinder will hold the implements up while running (even as fluid is running out of cylinder) but if you push the clutch down all the way the implement will drop or you turn the tractor off it will go slowly to the ground. Thanks

That seems to be normal for the MF system on those tractors. I've overhauled all of our pumps (8 units!) - leaks in the pump (and probably around the piston rings in the lift cylinder) seem to be the culprits.
New cyl heads and rings helped some, changing all the o-rings helped on some, but all still dropped with the pump stopped.
The biggest improvement was when I changed the precision washers on the sliding valve.
But it still dropped - so we operated them with the caution to lower the implement before shutdown, so it wouldn't rise unexpectedly on startup, busting something or somebody.

I assume you have removed the round cover by you heel as you sit on the tractor and looked up in there with a light to verify it is the cylinder that is leaking. Other possible trouble spots are the o-ring where the cylinder attaches to the top cover and the o-rings on the stand pipe (both ends) from the pump up to the top cover.

Thanks for the info, have replaced all the o-rings on the tube and tube cover and under the cover between cylinder and cover. also replaced relief valve.

Yes, have replaced all the orings and also the relief valve. Nothing seems to stop the leaking out of the cylinder. Has to something with the rings letting fluid by. We also put a ring in the cylinder before mounting on piston and it was tight that you could not get a feeler gauge in the crack of the ring. Somehow the fluid is getting by the rings. Thanks

Is the cylinder scored as bob suggested?

If I recall correctly, there were three rings on the piston. Did you stagger the ring gaps? If you lined up all the ring gaps, that could pretty easily cause your leak.

I had to hone the cylinder bore on my 1963 MF 35...
Was,is the bore on the lift "EGGED" shaped..out of round???
Bob...
