135 rear axle shims

I got the 135 right rear axle out in preparation for putting in a new oil seal. There was a lot of end play before I pulled the axle. Bearing looks and feels good. there were 3 thin shims. Took them out and there is still about 1/16 of end play when I pup the axle back in. Didn't put the dial indicator on it yet because I know it is too much. Wondering what to do next, just put it back together is the only option I can think of. Must have been run like that for a while before I got it.

Hi Phil. To achieve the correct end float of .002-.004” it is sometimes necessary to remove shims from the other side. It might be a bit of a nuisance having to take the other side out but it has a bonus in that the inner seal can be changed easily. This is the one that will allow oil through onto the shoes if it should fail. If there are no shims on the other side then there must be wear in one or both outer bearings. You can always use a DTI to check it but a guide is that one half shaft should turn freely without any sign of trying to turn the other and you should only feel the smallest amount of end float. When checking ensure that you have at least approximately equally spaced hub nuts fitted and tightened.

Thanks David, guess that is my next move. Both seals were leaking any way. Was hoping to only have one side apart at the same time. Someone has had it apart before. That is sure. will let you know what I find.
