TO20 short to ground?

I have a 1950 TO20 Ferguson. I have been working on a shorting out problem for some time now. I will do my best to keep this short but it goes on and
on. If I engage the starter with the main switch on or off the battery goes immediately to 0 volts the starter does not engage. When I disengage the
starter the battery begins to build back up to 8 volts. I have disconnected every part of the ignition system or replaced it. The generator has been rebuilt
so has the starter.
I cannot seem to find the short I have even replaced the points and condenser. If I use a 12 volt jump starter it will fire right up and run very well.

Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you very much.

Battery may have what we call a surface charge that is gone as soon as you put a load on it. Have you load tested the battery?

Have you checked your battery cables. Especially clean the frame end of ground cable and both cable post clamps. Replace if there is any question as to their reliability.

If you have an 8 volt battery is your charging system adjusted to get the battery up to full charge?

Have you done a load test on the battery?
