Tractor identification

Hi Everyone,

Our sailing club just got a new (old) tractor and I can't work out exactly what it is. It could be a 203 but I'm not sure. It has the torque converter transmission which is quite different since I am used to a Kubota. It also seems to only have 2 gears and no diff lock?

Any help with an operating guide would be fantastic

If it has the torque convertor drive it should have four speeds total, like my MF forklift with the same drive has. Longer lever is first up, second down. Shorter lever is low range forward, high range is back. Safety start is with lever in the center.

Thanks everyone. That was my other guess.

OK, 4 speeds but we need to be in neutral to raise the 3 point lift, right? Is there any difference between using high and low range other than speed?

And no diff lock? So if bogged do you use split brakes?

If tractor DOES have three point, that will only work when moving OR the lo-hi lever is in center-start position AND either forward or reverse pedal is down. Also be aware, if tractor has a PTO shaft it will also go BOTH directions, depending on which pedal is pushed. With no diff lock, brake needs applied ONLY to the spinning rear wheel.

Thanks again,

Any ideas what the knobs and switches might do? There is also a green light inside one of the instrument holes

If the switches and knobs have been added or changed over the years it is hard to say what they do without being at the tractor. I very much suggest you get the manuals for it right away, those will guide you through what was original equipment controls on it. The manuals are a source for properly servicing and maintaining the tractor you and anyone else who might operate or work on it will have at hand to look things up.

This site has a store and they may have the manuals for it. You can get manuals for it from the AGCO publications site as well. (http://www.agcopubs.com/default.aspx?model=205&brand=44096&keywords=tractor&searchForm=0). You want OEM manuals or reprints of them. I would suggest you get the operator's manual, and service manual. Printed, CD, or download are often options you can choose.

You can get a parts manual as well or use the on line one at https://apb.agcocorp.com/login.aspx?region=NorthAmerica. Click on view books in the guest user area. on the next page enter 205 as the model and check the Massey Ferguson box. That should get you a list of models with "205" somewhere in the title. scroll through them and you will find the 203/205 utility tractor book.

In the parts books it was originally a generator charging system. Is it still a generator or has it been converted to an alternator? If it is an alternator, what one? Photos may help if you don't know.

Have you ordered any manuals yet?

The generator has been replaced by an alternator. As it turns out one of those unknown switches turns on the supply to the regulator. I'm guessing the key stopped working for the charge circuit but still operates the solenoid so they put in a separate switch.

They may have decide to excite the alternator from a separate switch to prevent the feedback from the alternator to the ignition switch, which could prevent the tractor from shutting down when the ignition switch is turned off. One would need to see the whole thing to figure it out.

Another question. I think the transmission is called reversomatic or instant reverse. The forward and reverse work ok but what does the middle pedal do?

If my memory is not entirely out in the boonies, I think when the trottle pedal was new, it said ACC on the middle one as you can see, and FWD on the right one, and REV on the left one. That has obviously been worn off.

Another query - I want to top up the power steering fluid and none of the dealers can advise which oil to use. Looking around it should be something like M1129A or M1135 but some M1135 compatible oils are 20W which seems heavy. Any recommendations or brands? I was thinking Penrite tractor transmission 10W-30 or Valvoline Farmplus Hydratrans

reat thanks :D . It's M1129A compatible which I think is the main thing

This old tractor is struggling now. I got the service manual but it doesn't have all the detail I need.
Firstly the 3 point hitch isn't lifting. Took out the filter and it was super clogged. Cleaned it up but still not working. In the manual it says it could be a faulty relief valve and says to check while operating system. Does this mean I drop some oil, take off the left cover and look near the pump when trying to lift?

The instareverse pedals have also come loose but the manual doesn't show these. If I turn the grease nipple at the end of the mounting shaft it tightens or loosens the whole shaft. Is this correct? I expected the nipple to come off so I could tighten the shaft and then put the grease nipple back.
