MF 50 Steering

Looking at MF50. PS works good but when you turn right all the way it's hard to turn back. Like it locks up. Pull back hard then it's works OK. Other way works OK. Is it just adjustment or something wrong?

Look closely at the spool valve link ends and pins, when those parts get worn the spool valve travel is shorter and causes loss of power steering assist. That valve does not travel far with good ends/pins, and ANY wear just makes things worse.

My MF50 does that. It's like Dieseltech said, the pins are worn and loose at the control valve. One of these days I need to tighten them up, but the steering works fine unless turning full right lock, so you just take that into account when using the tractor.

That is the linkage that goes into the control valve. The end of the valve itself is just barely in the photo on the far left.

You can replace the pins without getting into the control valve. There is a small roll pin at the left end of the adjustment linkage you can tap out with a small punch and you can see the pin for the other end lying next to the hole it goes into on the right. My problem is the holes for the larger pin are worn out. I need to drill the pedestal pin holes and the linkage pin hole all to the same size and turn a new pin to fit. You may be able to take out some of the slop by just putting in a new pin though.

My dad had some work on his 65 done at a JD dealer. They tightened the tapered alignment bolt to remove steering free play, the result was no power steering. Sometimes backing that bolt out will give you a little more movement.
