Hi there. I'm rebuilding an early to35 with the z134 gasser, and i've run into a snag. The retainers on the valves, both pin style and clip style are of a kind I've never seen before. They appear to bea two-component part with ball bearings. The lower component that makes contact with the valve spring appears to be a flimsy pressed 18ga metal bit. Most of them are broken and littering their jetsam all over the valve train. I've searched high and low for replacements, but can't find any. Is there a universal part I can substitute, possibly a single component piece like I've seen on every other valve stem?
Also, for some reason the last person to work on the valve train installed two copper washers under the springs instead of one. Is this standard, or should there only be one per valve? I suspect the person was trying to reduce valve float, but I can't see that valve float would be much of an issue with a low rpm application like the z134. The cylinder head appears to have been cut and fitted with hardened valve seats, which are all shiny and new looking, so I don't think the valve heads are recesssed under factory spec. The valves themselves appear to be new as well. I was told this engine had about a hundred hours of service when i bought it a few months ago, having recently been rebuilt.
I think the extra washer created too much pressure on the retainers and broke them. I've found every other part I need for this tractor so far. I sure would like to finish it off and get back to my yard work.
