when in Low range and going downhill in REVERSE my 50 makes a whining and ratchet noise from trans. or rear or both. hard for me to determine exactly where. Tips, suggestions, advice...all welcome
thanks.

Some whining noise in reverse with the gears more loaded going down a hill with engine braking would be pretty normal. When backing my MF50 down the ramps of the trailer there is definitely a loader gear whine when it is coming down the steepest part. A ratcheting noise would be more worrisome. Is it a constant clicking/snapping sound or random? Is it the same in high and low range?

One thing to check is to see if the hydraulic filter has unscrewed from the pump and is laying in the bottom of the case. I had this happen because it wasn't safety wired. The metal filter assembly would sometimes come into contact with the ground speed PTO gear and make a grinding noise. It could be that when you back down a hill it rolls into the gear sometimes making the noise. You would have to take off one of the round side covers to check.
