MH-444 timing marks

I am starting to assemble a Continental H-277 gas out of my 444 that was stuck. While trying to line up the cam shaft and crank marks something doesn't seem right.One of the two marks on the cam gear are really hard to see. But I think I can make out both marks. Any way, with the marks lined up,the cam shaft looks 180 deg. out. It looks like the cam shaft is on the exhaust stroke not the compression.If that makes sense. It's not a big deal if I know the camshaft is properly timed. I can put the distributer in on the compression stroke. Any engine I have ever worked on the the cam and crank marks line up they are TDC compression stroke. Has any one with experience with continental engines seen this before?
 
There should be matching marks one will be on the tooth, one on the groove. If you do not get a better answer, I can go out and look on my spare engine.
 
Some four cylinder engines cam/crank marks align on cylinder four compression stroke, long as the distributor is installed correctly engine will run fine.
 
set the pushrods in and see what they do when you rock the crank back and forth. if they dont rock you are on compression. post a picture.
 
I'm pretty sure I have the timing marks lined up. I can't get out to the shop till tonight to take another look at it. I would think that the No. 4 cylinder will be on the compression stroke. When the timing
marks are lined up.
 
you want #1 on compression thats why i said #4 valves have to be on the rock. #1 valves will be still on compression at TDC. i sure dont recall anything about #4 cyl. being #1 when i have timed these engines.
 
I finally got the chance to look at the engine this morning. When the cam and crank marks are lined up, the number 4 cylinder is on the compression stroke.It shouldn't matter as long as the ignition timing is set correctly to the right cylinder.
