Water Pump Gasket

1967 MF 135 with Continental engine, I was bush hogging but stopped to back up, and that’s when I noticed water dripping from front end, checked temp not hot. Water was coming from behind The water pump. I feel some play when I move fan shaft back and forth. All help appreciated...

Sounds like the water pump bushing and seal are bad. Not the gasket. I just had the same thing on my MF65. Need a pump replacement. There is a small hole in the bottom of the pump and that is where your leak is coming from. It would be easy to think it was coming from the gasket but it is doubtful.

Do I need to remove front cap and radiator to change out water pump
on MF-135 with Continental engine?

I had my MF202 self eject a fan blade which resulted in me buying a new radiator. I also found that there was some wiggle in the fan so I decided to put on a new water pump while I was at it.

This is on a Z134 Continental gas engine. To answer your question, when installing the pump, I sure was glad that radiator was out of the way. I did not have to remove that large front cowling nose piece and was glad for that.

One more thing. There are four small bolts holding the fan onto the pump shaft. The first thing I removed was the fan. I installed the fan onto the pump before installing the radiator. That was the wrong move. I could not get the new radiator back in there with the shroud in place. I took the fan back off and installed the radiator. I not hard to install the fan after that. You just need a small ratcheting box end wrench or a socket with a short ratchet on it.

There are four bolts holding the water pump onto the block. You would think the four holes would form a perfect square but they don't. If you don't get it on correctly the last bolt will not go in. So, find the right position for the pump first for all the holes to line up. The pump is round, so you would think it would fit in any position around the clock but it don't work that way. At least it didn't with my new pump.

Correction !

I just went out and looked at my old water pump and there are three bolts holding it to the block. But, it still will only fit on one way so make sure the holes all line up before tightening.
