cause somebody who knows way more than me said the early one's were six volt. and the gen. has no provision for tractometer ?????

Not saying it might not have been 6 volt. Just saying if it was 12 volts it might have needed a generator and the one with tachometer drive provisions was more money and/or not available, so they used one they, or the parts store, had on hand.

Is the starter 6 or 12 volts? Any Delco or other manufacturer number on it? If it was converted and everything is 12 volt they did it well except for the tach drive.

my MF 50 was built in '57 and was still 6 volt pos. gnd when I bought it in '09. I had the gen rebuilt to 12 v. and wired it for neg. gnd. using a 12 v. internally ballasted coil so it doesn't need a separate resistor. Still has the 6 v. starter.

the tag on the gen. is red so that indicates what ? six volt ? maybe converted to 12V. ?
the starter has no tag i can see.

Original Delco Remy tags for 6 volt had a black background. The 12 volt tags had a red back ground.

It doesn't help answer your question, but the MF50 parts books on line show 12 volt systems. I would have expected some to be 6 volt, but I'm not seeing that in those parts books. They may have updated the on line books and an old printed copy would show 6 volt systems.

i could not remember anymore what color tag indicated 6 or 12V.

the TO-35 went to 12V during its run so why would its follow up model go back to 6V ???

One would think they would stay with 12V if they had changed on a prior model.

I still think your original had a tach drive and there wasn't a generator with the drive provision available when they replaced the generator, so they installed one with no drive provision.

have to agree with that.

I have a Massey Harris 50 which I think is just before the MF50 and I know the history of my tractor since new and it has always been a 12v neg ground.
