Fuel line connection MF135

SP135

I'm replacing a fuel line on my Jan 1971 MF 135 diesel - Perkins AD3.152 engine. Its the line from the Lift Pump to the Primary Filter. I have bought a pre made line (Sparex part S.42206).

The old line had a flared end, and there is a rubber washer inside the female part of the filter housing where the pipe screws into. The new line is not flared and came with an olive.

I removed the old rubber washer from the filter housing and put the new pipe with olive into the housing, but after tightening the nut on the pipe it does not seem to compress the olive so the
pipe remains loose.

Before I go any further, I thought I should get some advice. Several questions come to mind;

i) Is it OK to use the new unflared pipe with the olive, if so am I correct in removing the rubber washer first?

ii) How far should I slide the new pipe into the housing - its long enough to project about 5mm or 10 mm on the inside of the housing, but I have assumed it should just protrude a couple of mm
only?

iii) Is there an obvious reason why the olive is not getting compressed?

The old and new pipes are similar diameter, they are shown in the photo uploaded along with the rubber washer (used with the old pipe), along with the filter housing.

Thanks in advance
Simon

Perkins stopped using the brass line sleeves years ago, the rubber grommets seal better with less nut tension. I use steel brake line when making fuel lines anymore. Smaller Perkins use 1/4 inch lines, most six cylinder engines use 5/16. I keep several size rubber line seals on hand..
