Shifter stuck

I have a Massey 65. Have been using it quite often. Over the weekend I was getting off the tractor to open a gate and when I pressed in the clutch and moved the shifter from 3rd up to neutral....the shifter got stuck in gear. Looks like it is close to 2nd gear placement but its in reverse when you let out the clutch.

It has happened before on this tractor when I was growing up, we have had this tractor for 45 years. But I do not recall how my dad was able to get it unstuck. I shut the tractor off...tried pulling it down from the ground to no avail.

Any suggestions on how to get it to release?

Place the Hi-Lo lever in the center, start position, this relieves gear tension. Remove the trans oil fill cap, and with a long bar move the First/Reverse shift rail, has the large gear FORWARD to neutral position. When the trans gear lever will move crossways you are done. What happens is the first/reverse shift rail overshoots the neutral position with the lever still in the second/third shift rail. Usually happens when trying to shift fast from first to second. Shift SLOW, it ain't a HURST...

One small thing to add to Dieseltech's clear explanation . Use a piece of pvc pipe to protect the threads of the gear box filler cap thread . It surprising just how easily they can be burred over , you don't want an extra headache after you've finally freed the gear shift .

when shifting to R or 2 there is a tendency to lift up on the shifter. this can cause the problem also

I'll second that! Try to develop the habit, or break the habit!, of lifting on the shifter at all. That will solve a lot of problems related to this happening.

I had the same thing happen to my MF202 a couple times. Fixed it by sticking a medium size pry bar down in the trans fill hole as described above. After the second time, I took my time when shifting the thing and was careful to not pull up on it. Sometimes when it doesn't want to go into gear, I double clutch it instead of trying to jamb it in gear. Have had no trouble since.
