Tread Width - how to measure

Hi Folks,

I'm attaching a new-to-me MF 41 sickle bar mower to my MF 245 tractor. I have the mower's manual. It specifies adjustments to the mower based on "Tread Width" of the tractor. See figure 7 if you have the manual, too.

The options given are:
52-56 in.
62-66 in.
72-76 in.

My question is how to measure this. The manual does not tell me that. Is it centre to centre of the tires. Or outside to outside? Or something else?

The internet seems to suggest centre to centre. The 245 tractor manual says centre to centre for front wheels, but doesn't specify about rear wheels. My local MF dealer said outside to outside, but I don't think he knows much.

Presently, the outside to outside measurements of my tires are about 72 in. The centre to centre is about 58 in. (not in any of the 3 options given in the manual.

What do you say?

Thanks,
Eric

As far as I know vehicle tread width is always center to center of the tires on an axle.

The 135 Operator's manual I have says center to center for both. The write ups for adjusting front and rear widths are where it says center to center, for front or rear, are separate.

I checked the 135 Operator's manual I have and it says center to center for both. The write ups for adjusting front and rear widths are separate, so where it says center to center is in each section.

The MF 165 ops manual show the spacing as centerline. I use an MF41 on the 165 with the out to out dimension at 72" and it works just fine. Also works for the 72" finish mower.
