MF T20 starting problem

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help . I have a 1948 petrol T20 which runs on a 6V system but with a 12V battery. I've just put a brand new 6V 140AH battery on and it won't turn the engine over. The 12V battery turns it over and starts without a problem. The 6V battery has been checked and is fine. I've had the starter motor off and the 6V battery doesn't throw the starter gear out whereas the 12V does. All the connections have been cleaned. With the 6V battery the starter just whirs round without throwing the starter gear out. Any ideas. Cheers

Is there a possibility the starter is 12 volt or was converted to 12 volt?

Just curious, what is your location?

Thanks for replying. I'm down in Cornwall. We were thinking just that but I can't imagine why anyone would do it. No idea how to check that one out either.

Cornwall, England?

Any numbers on the starter?

The starter may be worn causing it to drag on 6 volts. Using 12 volts may be hiding the problem. You might want to have it checked out by a shop that repairs them. It is still possible it has been rebuilt as 12 volts, a rebuild shop might be able to tell.

Thanks for the advice, we'll do that at the end of the season when it goes back in the garage. In the meantime it will run on a 12V battery with the charge system
disconnected as we only use it to launch boats. Thanks again.
