My Delco starter failed a month ago. Model number 1109457. I ordered the replacement 12V starter through this website. Once it came in, I installed on the tractor. It spun freely without making contact with the flywheel. I removed the starter and turned the flywheel a quarter turn and reinstalled. This time, prior to starting, I hooked up my jump box and set it to jump start mode. I did this even though I metered my battery and was getting 12.4 V. Again, I attempted to start and it freely spun without making contact with the flywheel. I pulled the starter off again and took it over to my flat bed. From there, I hooked up some jumper cables to my wifes van and attached them to the starter to see if the starter drive moved forward. It did, but very little. I suspected maybe the drive spring itself was not the proper length, restricting the forward movement. Instead of sending it in to a shop, I took the new armature and housing and installed the old core and drive into the new housing. Once Installed, she cranked over. After setting the timing on the distributor, I had her running really good. Went to go drop my box blade implement and as I was backing up, she died. I checked my fuel level and she was a bit low, so I filled her up and tried to restart. Nothing! Starter acted like it crapped out. After I pulled the starter off again, moved the flywheel some, reinstalled and still all I got was free spinning. I pulled it off again and inspected the bendix gear and it looked worn, so I decided to order a starter drive since I believed the armature was good. Today, the new drive came in, and I installed it and still, not making contact with the flywheel. I will note that the new starter came with washers or shims, and the old starter I had did not have these. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Im getting pretty frustrated. Thanks
