mf135 running rough

I have a mf 135 3cyl diesel, swept axle, hour meter shows 5000 hours but may have stopped long ago. it starts well and idles ok, but from 800rpm to 1400 rpm it runs roughly, then at 1700rpm is quite smooth. no noticeable smoke from exhaust, injectors have been replaced with new ones, along with filters. my mechanic is thinking valves. any suggestions as to what could be the problem and how to test before we tear it to pieces? thanks in advance.

I've never had valve problems with that engine, but have you adjusted the the valve clearance? With that many hours it may be a good time to reset them.

Can be injection pump too, three cylinder pumps are sensitive to wear in the built in charging pump..
