MF65 transmission shaft retainer housing removal

It's taken a while, but I finally got the old tractor split open and after a couple of days of work am nearing the "end game" for replacing the seals/gaskets. I'm now to the final seal- the one behind the transmission shaft retainer- and I'm stuck. The retainer housing refuses to slide off of the PTO drive shaft and I don't want to use a pry bar with too much force to risk damaging something else. Has anyone gotten these off and what steps do you recommend?

I'm surprised someone hasn't replied to your question.
You are correct to not pry on that.
It has been many years since I have removed that.
I will have to go home to find my repair manual in order to be confident in my advice.

A repair manual would be a great investment for you.
I'll get back to you in a day or so.

I'm not familiar with the 65 but with the 135 you have to drop the PTO drive gear down in order to pull the housing out. I haven't quite gotten there on my tractor yet but will in the next few weeks. Bundy bears shed is a YouTube channel that has helped me. He does a Massey 135 6 speed restoration and his video #49 shows him stripping the gearbox ( about a half hour into the video he pulls the housing out). This info is for a 135 and 65 so may or may not pertain to your tractor.

My best advice is to go to You tube and watch Bundy Bears Shed and watch. MF 135 6 speed transmission #49 stripping the gear box. (<Even though this video is for a 135 it is the same process on a 65 etc.) p>There is a gear that protrudes into the upper input shafts housing that must be dropped down in order to remove the input shafts.
Pretty big job. That video is over an hour and it is a series of several. The thing you want to see is about 30 minutes in.

No short cuts to this job.

I am trying to follow the service manual and it says the shaft can be pulled out through the front viewed here. I looked up the Youtube video recommended by you folks (thanks!) and that gentleman used a punch to punch the shaft out through the back. So there's a difference between that model and this one. See the manual snippet I've uploaded here.

The manual says to remove the snap ring shown in the color photo, and I'll be darned if that sucker is even going to budge. I used a flathead screwdriver like I did on the rear PTO shaft snap rings last year, and tonight, punched a hole right in the bearing. So that'll be replaced. But without the ability to remove this snap ring means I can't remove the shaft. I'm at my wits end with this thing and am about to find a mobile mechanic unless someone has some thoughts about it.

As per Service Manual...I believe, not all MF 6 speed Transmissions are as per this service Manual..

Manual covers MF 35-50 & 65

Bob..Owner 1963 MF FE 35 X 6 speed..
I'm not an experienced 65 MF Mechanic...I Just happen to have the service Manual..

Thanks for the post! I'm up to step 14 and Bundy Bear on Youtube prefers to punch the PTO shaft backward. I don't have the luxury of removing the entire gearbox, so I'm trying to follow the manual. But now the PTO shaft is stuck when I try to pull it out through the front. I have about 1/4" of free play in and out with the shaft, but it's binding up on something, and the parts diagram along with Bundy Bear's video shows there shouldn't be anything holding it in other than slip-fit gears.

Are there any tips for getting this shaft to slide off the gears? Would a slide hammer attached to the bolt (photo shown) work well in this case?

By the way, I had to cut the PTO shaft snap ring in pieces in order to just get to where I am now. This project just keeps getting better!
