MF 65 CLUTCH PROBLEM

I have a MF65 with Serial Number SNDW702494. I I split to repair the clutch and the flywheel plate was broken because one of the pivot pin retaining pin had gotten loose. My problem is that I do not know which clutch to buy. All the clutches that I see for the MF65 are with 9 springs and this one has 12 springs. Is it possible that the previous owner placed the wrong clutch in this tractor? Can someone please advise me on how to proceed?

Hello,
Simple answer to this one. In the past there were different colour coil springs for each model of tractor. I believe that your original springs may well have been mauve/purple. To simplify matters MF and non-gen suppliers now provide only one colour and that is red. Instead of the original 12 springs, the 35/135 now has 6 springs, the 65/165 has 9 springs and 175 to 188 has all 12 fitted. This also applies to later generation tractors. Your new clutch unit should have nine springs but also check with the supplier that it has the correct belleville spring fitted, that is the spring which acts on the PTO plate.......and of course that it's an eleven inch not a twelve.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT ORIGINALLY THEY WERE TWELVE SPRINGS AND NOW THEY ARE NINE? I LOOKED AT THE SPRINGS YESTERDAY AND THEY ARE BLACK. THEY ARE NEITHER RED NOR PURPLE. THE MAIN CLUTCH DISC IS 11 INCHES BUT I HAVE NOT REMOVED THE PTO DISC TO MEASURE IT. BOTH DISC ARE 10 SPLINE.

Hello, that is correct. If this is a unit that has been overhauled or is new stock then it should have the 9 red springs 886 396M1. However if the original spec springs have been used then it will have 12 886 632M1 springs fitted. So it would appear that having 12 black springs is the correct unit for the 65. Using the older springs may be due to the shelf age of the unit or perhaps the manufacturer has access to the original colour springs.

not to hijack the thread but:

on the stuck clutch on my MF35 backhoe, you advised splitting it and doing the job right

after much peering into the darkness under the trany and oil in the face, I am splitting the unit

job is not as bad as I feared but some of the pieces are plenty heavy

thank you

Hi,
If you haven't already done it, don't take any chances. Make sure that the back end is supported on blocks or stands. Cut some wooden wedges and tap them in above or below the front axle so that the engine can't lean over when it is released. Will also help with the refitting.
Come back if you need any more help.

Sorry for resurrecting a dead post, but I'm in the same boat as the OP... 12 black springs on a dual clutch. I am OK to order the 9 red spring kit for this?
