MF 40 3pt.hitch

I just purchased a MF 40 tractor/loader I believe is an early 70 s model. I know nothing about the mechanics of a Three point hitch this is my first time owning one. I bought the machine because it ran well and I needed a loader. The three point hitch does have a problem I would like to figure out though so I am looking for some input. No matter what position the hitch lever is in the hitch raises when the tractor starts up and can t be lowered with the lever.I haven t tried putting any weight on it but I would imagine I wouldn t need to have weight on it to raise and lower it with the lever. The lever does nothing. When I shut the tractor off the hitch lowers. Any suggestions?

Hello, when you stop the engine does the
linkage creep down over a period of time
or fall quickly as you would expect it
to? Not familiar with the 40 but does it
have a small quadrant on the rhs (behind
you right heek) that says 'RESPONSE'? If
so make sure that it is set to FAST. When
the linkage is down can you lift it by
hand easily and does it fall freely? Does
it have an isolator valve on the front of
the hydraulic cover? If so make sure that
the 'linkage" position is selected.If
these external checks are ok there is
likely to be a problem with perhaps the
control valve being stuck in the pump or
possibly a broken oscillator although the
latter is unlikely. Let us know how you
get on with the above and we can move to
the next step if necessary.

Thanks for responding. The linkage falls fairly fast when I shut the engine off. As far as I know there is only a position control and a draft control for the three point hitch and moving those levers has no effect on the position of the hitch. I will take a closer look at it.
