MF165 Oil Leak from Fuel Pump (diesel)

I have a 1971 MF165 Diesel with a nagging oil leak from the fuel pump. I installed a new fuel pump thinking it may have been an issue with the pump mounting surface or gasket, but with the second pump I have realized the leak is coming from the priming pump lever pivot shaft, NOT the pump mounting surface/gasket. It even leaks for a while after the tractor is turned off. I don't know if that priming lever shaft is intended to be oil tight or if the issue is excess oil in the cam shaft area running into the fuel pump. When I take the fuel pump off there will be 8-10 ounces of oil run out of the mounting hole from the block. And I am certain it is engine oil leaking, not diesel fuel.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Have the same issue with my 165. It is not excessive but is noticeable. After a days worth of work I just wipe off the excess.

Thank you both for your responses. Seems like I must have a fuel pump that is particularly bad. Leak is a quite steady drip and rather excessive. I'll look for a new fuel pump but it's hard to know when you are getting good parts versus poorly mfd parts any more.

Two years ago I purchased a new Transfer fuel pump for my MF FE 35 X......it was total JUNK!

Fuel pump was purchased off internet. I had it sitting in the shop until I could install it....two years lapsed... it was off shore JUNK!

Last year I purchased a fuel transfer pump from "YT", installed, ran Tractor this past summer 50+ hrs, pump never leaked...

As others said yes it is possible for new
lift pumps to also leak, happened to me
too for my 165D. Bought another one and
got lucky with no leaks. Annoying for
sure. Air bleeding not on my list of fun
things to do.

Glad I'm not the only one suffering. My MF 50A: two brand new pumps, and both have leaked bad around the hand pump shaft hole.

The first AI brand pump I bought felt disappointing right out of the box. It leaked immediately. The second Sparex brand unit I tired felt better, but also began leaking in short order. I'll put up with some leaks on a 50 year old machine, but this is too much for me.

What brand is the YT pump? Might have to give it a shot.

Hey Bob.. I recognize those pics.. I followed your advice with the hydraulic fittings out of the fuel pump. Worked awesome! I used rubber hose with push-on JIC fittings, but the idea is the same. Thanks man!
