Older Massey recommendations

Can someone recommend an older Massey that has a good reputation , something with 60 to 80 HP that I can use to run my snow blower and bush hog and maybe do some field work. I am looking for a Massey because of the low reverse speeds. I don't want to spend more then $4000 to $5000.

I was looking at a 285, but research suggested to stay away from this model because of head gasket problems.

Have you considered the Massey 175? It is rated at 63 PTO horsepower. I have a theory that simplicity equals reliability. With that in mind, I would recommend a later one with an 8 speed transmission and 2 stage clutch over one with Multi-Power and Independent PTO. The 180 is basically the same tractor in row crop configuration. They were followed by the 265.

MF 175 or 275 IMHO would be good. As mentioned, I believe the 180 was the row crop version of the 175.

an old massey with a good reputation... massey 44 special. its all down hill on the ferguson side. well maybe the massey super 90 with the perkins.

Avoid the tractor like the North American version of the MF285 that has the Perkins 4.318 diesel engine because of the head gasket issues. The 175, or 275 would be good for what you need. The European 285 used the Perkins 4.248 diesel.

I have both a 175 and a 180 same Perkins gas e ngine 63 hp in both but my recommendation is the 180 6 speed with multipower the multipower is good on the go half gear shift mine has 34 inch rear tire and set
up for better sight and good ride. 175 with 8 speed is short frame and rough ride not a pleasant to ride.

After reading all the the recommendations, I think I have settled on trying to find a Super 90. Can someone tell me if these were good tractors or if they were prone to problems? Also, would the Perkins desiel be a better choice then the gas engine? How easy is it to get parts for these tractors?

The diesel is definitely better than the gas, and if it's the eight speed that's a plus too over the Multipower option on that model. SOME parts are getting hard to get, but not too bad yet. The Perkins A4.300 is replaced by the A4.318 used in the 285/1085 models, both engines use the same head gasket.

Be advised that the MF 85 and Super 90 were a unique design. Many parts interchange between those 2 models, but they have very little in common with the rest of the MF line.

Would this stop you from buying one? Are the most important parts still available like engine parts, injector parts, hydrualic pump and seals, etc?

You couldn't give me a 85, or Super 90, a 175, 180, or 275 are much better options.

We all have our personal favorites, I'd
suggest a 265 or 275 with 8 speed, very
reliable and parts available, better
hydraulics than the 100 series. I've had a
135D, currently run a 165D and a 265, and
used my neighbors 275 a few times too. The
265 and 275 are simply great IMHO. Good
luck, all mentioned tractors here good
choices. If you buy one lots of good
people here to support maintenance and
repair questions.
