hello everyone. first post and first massey. my question is, do you have to bleed the cooling system on a 65 diesel? m y rad was leaking so i pulled it and soldered it up. after i put it all back together i could only get 1 1/2 gallons of coolant in it. i started it up and ran it hoping it would burp out but it just started overflowing instead. it was fine before this and never over heated on me. any help would be great.

i never had the tstat out just the rad. by the way the top hose gets hot and i can watch the coolant moving in the rad but the bottom hose stays cold.

it was working before i repaired the rad. i am baffled. i suppose i will pull it back apart. replace the water pump and tstat.

I would place thermostat in a Pyrex measuring cup...suspend off the bottom of container....check temperature at which thermostat opens... if thermostat is operating...I would then have radiator cores cleaned....

t is fixed! i went to the guy i bought it from to ask if he had has this problem before. turns out he is mechanical dumb. he got it from his grandpa so i talked to him. turns out there is a pipe plug above the lower rad hose, he came to my house with his allen head socket and extension. he started the tractor and let warm up, then removed the plug just enough so that air was escaping and soon coolant was coming out. he then tightened it back up and now it is working fine. this tractor was bought new by him in 58 and he used it to work his tobacco farm till the bottom fell out of the market for the little guy. he was happy that the old girl was going to be worked even if it was brush hogging and skidding logs on my place.
