Massey Ferguson 65 info please.

Young man that lives up the road from me purchased a 1958 Massey 65 gas utility tractor. It had been sitting a few years. I have a parts manual and I&T manual I am giving him. I have worked on a Massey 65 diesel ag tractor so I am familiar with the design.
I will help him do a tune up, change all the fluids and grease it in the next couple of weeks. Will have to repair the wiring also. The exhaust pipe need replaced and the brakes are operational but stick. The engine does not smoke and sounds pretty good. Will know more about the engine after getting the exhaust fixed.
It is going to be used with a 5' rotary cutter to mow around their property and other chores.
Are there any problems with this tractor I should be looking out for ?

Thanks

Great tractor, good engine. No real weak spots IMO, outside of the gas engine using more fuel per hour. If it's got the Multi-power I consider that a real plus.

Chances are the HYD PUMP is the original with NO inlet SCREEN.

If the pump has been changed, it may have an Inlet Screen......

If it were my Tractor, I would check, if screen is present...I would remove and clean screen......

With tractor NOT RUNNING,Inspection port to HYD PUMP removed, oil drained, view the bottom of HYD PUMP compartment for signs of foreign material, as well as unidentified components...eg..broken bearing cage etc, etc,

(quoted from post at 13:38:28 10/19/19) Multi-Power didn't exist in 1958.

Thanks for the responses.
Bob's post got me to thinking (very dangerous), it does have multi-power so I looked at the serial number again. I had the numbers wrong. It is actually a 59 model.
I can remember stuff from years ago but can not keep numbers straight in my head for 2 days.

Thanks

That still doesn't figure. Multi-Power didn't come out until about 1963. Could it be a tractor that has been assembled from 2 or more tractors?

Forgive my ignorance of Massey Fergusons.
It has a dual range shifter and the regular gear shift.
What is the correct name for this transmission so I can tell the young man what he has without looking like an old fool.

I didn't know that Bob. Thanks.

Multipower apparently was out before 1963. I have an MF50 diesel with a 1962 serial number and multipower. The multipower has been removed, but the slot in the dash is still there for it.

Also - if you look, there is a Nebraska Test for 1961 for a MF65 with 12 speed which IMHO could only be multipower.

These are great tractors, wish I had 2. When you fix the exhaust do keep the muffler up on the engine, run the exhaust pipe under the foot rest. The after market kits that put the muffler under the foot rest are an invitation to a fire. The brakes are in the axle housing, a real big job to repair. Try a wear-in trick first. You may be able to burnish the brake pads a bit by driving with the brake dragging to get the rust off and free up the mechanism. He will find it to be a powerful and agile tractor. As for the gas versus diesel, I doubt he will ever drive enough hours to notice much money difference.

The muffler is in good shape, just the exhaust pipe is rusted through. I did the brakes on a 65 diesel several years ago so I am familiar with that fun.

Thanks
