Massey Harris 44D

Went and looked at this 44D today with my neighbor. It hasn't run in at least 15 years so the guy says. The old timer completely filled the crankcase with oil to preserve the internals on this engine. We hooked up a 850CCA new 12V battery direcly to the starter toda and it turned over sluggishly. I would have liked to pull the injectors and squirted oil into the cylinders but we weren't really prepared to work on it. Overall it is doable but will require a lot of TLC. There asking price was $2500 but no way i'd pay that for it.
What would you pay for a beast like this.

PS Back tires are good

(quoted from post at 04:19:22 10/10/19) Price depends if the injection pump head plunger is broken or
not, my guess is it is now...

Did cranking it over a couple turns break it dieseltech?

(quoted from post at 08:46:18 10/10/19) Most likely the first 1/4 turn broke the plunger...

Oh great... guess this would be a good tractor to walk away from. Sounds expensive to fix too. I'll be telling my neighbior who was interested in this 44D cuz his Dad had one back in the early fifties

If you are really lucky, it might be ok. Could one test the fuel delivery by taking
off an injector line and cranking it? If the damage is already done that won't
damage further, would it? Otherwise, the tractor is worth parts....back tires,
starter, manifold, crankshaft and radiator is about all you could expect to sell,
and those won't add up to one thousand bucks.

The guy said the least would take would be 1500 for the tractor, a single bottom plow and a brush hog. We walked away. He didn't really like my offer of $300 for all the pieces

The problem with a Massey Harris 44 is the engine parts availability. One recent supplier quoted me current new gasoline cylinder sleeve prices are $345....EACH. And a six week build time after you order.

Bought 55D hand clutch a few year ago at auction for fifty buck, had one real good tire. First had to take right hand brake drum apart as it was seized, rusted and
wheel would not turn. Two inch tree was grown in between brake pedals, cut that and pulled it home. Engine was stuck, removed pre-cups on opposite side of
injectors and and put half cup atf in each pistons let stand for few days. Removed starter and used gooseneck on flywheel and after about an hour it broke loose.
Pulled it for a bit and cleaned pistons bores, put plugs back ,put water in rad ,there was fuel in tank. Pulled about twenty feet and it started and purred like
a kitten for about 5 minutes then stopped. No fuel comming to pump, filter system totally contaminated. Rusty tank was problem, tank has to be cleaned and
different fuel filters installed as the little bowl filter is so contaminated that more modern fuel filter system installed will be the answer, and of course
cleaning tank is a must. Fuel pump seems to have been working fine. Check fuel system and tank.
