MF 65 Generator Conversion issue

The generator on my MF 65 never worked so I bit the bullet and purchased a one wire alternator and universal mounting kit. Once I got the generator off it became abundantly clear that the alternator wasn?t going to fit in the same spot the generator did as the fins would hit the casting. After a bit more time playing around with some different bracket configurations I still wasn?t able to fit the alternator in. Has anyone had this issue before? Were you able to make the universal mounting kit work or is something custom needed?

My 1964 model 65 diesel had this awful conglomeration thing like a 12SE cobbled into place that looked like it might fall any second, and it didn't work anyway.

Its pretty much got to be something custom I think.
Its a tight space there and theres only 2 bolt holes for mounting

I used a Denso mini alternator 12180-SE from DBE Electrical, about 60 bucks.
Its a 12v 35 amp Chevy mini alternator. It has never failed me yet, but I don't use the lights much on my tractor.

It fits perfectly into the tight space you have. I did have to fabricate a mount, but the belt adjustment arm that was with it worked fine.
I got a new belt, I can't remember exactly but I think it was a 47 inch belt. NAPA 47470W was the belt number.
Depending on how you make your mount if you go this route your belt length might be slightly different.

Thanks everyone for the information. It sounds like I will need to get a custom mount fabricated. I contacted the YouTube poster to see if they can pass along any information he has on the mount he created. I'm also looking into exchanging my alternator for the smaller one Fixt and Phil recommended.

Just a quick update on this. I picked up a Denso and was able to get it hooked up and working this morning! I was able to use my generic mount I purchased. I didn t even need to change my belt! Thanks for all of the information everyone. It was tremendously helpful!
