mf135 perkins gas fuel heat

I have a Perkins gas MF135 and when I mow with it I have seen the fuel get hot enough to boil. I have the exhaust manifold heat shield installed and in tact, but I don't have the hood on. Do you think the hood is the key factor here? It is a vertical exhaust so I could see that being the issue. Any other factors I'm not thinking of? Any other heat shields that these tractors had?

Heat rises so it would seem reasonable that the hood would trap heat, but it may need a hood to move air over the fuel tank. Do you have a good water temp gauge (one with numbers instead of the one with the green, and red) to see how hot the engine is really running.

My thinking on the hood is that it would provide additional shielding from the muffler. I don't know if the heat "problem" is coming from the block or from the exhaust, and since the manifold has a shield, I suspected it might expect to have shielding from the hood for the muffler. Previous owner had taken the front sheet metal all of to paint and I was just using it for chores and was going to paint it and put it on, but I don't want to do that if there is another problem to fix first.

It does not seem to be running hot, but I can't put a number on it. It was after mowing 6 acres with a 72" bush hog, so I was working it.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the timing! After adjusting the tractor had more power and ran much cooler.

The muffler shouldn't be putting off that much heat to boil the fuel in the tank. I would look at the ignition timing like MikeBarica suggested.

I'll try that! Thanks.
