MF 250 PTO problem

Friend was running his brush hog the other day in some heavy stuff and the PTO quit working.
It still works in the ground speed position.
He said it had gotten a little harder to shift the PTO into gear recently.
Any ideas on what to check first?
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

Might not have had it engaged all the way, and it probably chewed up the splines would be my guess. Remove the round side cover on the left hand side where the pto lever is. You should be able to see what the problem is pretty easy (drain out the trans/hydraulic oil before removing the side cover).
