MF 50 (sames as 35) gas miss/water in oil

This little old MF50 has been in the family since 1955. low hours for a 65 year old tractor and strong motor. 6 months ago it started to miss...#1 cylinder ...but compression over 100. I did not use it much but the miss did not clear up when it warmed up. new Points, plugs, coil, etc, no improvement. Then one day when I went to move it, there was a little milky color to the oil. (engine has never been apart and still runs very strong ..before miss). Continental gas. I have not started it since I found the oil/water mix.

Called my tractor mechanic to fix it. He has the head off and can not see a bad spot in the old head gasket. I do not want to just replace the head gasket, and button it up, without checking other potential causes and/or problems. So I and looking for suggestions and ideas.
Many thanks for sharing your experience.

Also it could be crack between cylinder on bottom. Just replaced engine block on 35 with same problem.I only removed the pan and let set with coolant in engine to see where it was leaking. Was leaking between 3&4. Thought it was O ring on sleeve but didn't have that good luck. With head off you will not be able to check this way.

Any ideas how to check for a crack or an o-ring problem with the head off? Would this cause a Miss? Any suggestions on diagnosis welcome.

It may have a crack in the bottom of block between the cylinders, you would have to take the oil pan off to see it. The blocks are not very thick in that area so cracking is a problem there.

I'd remove the oil pan, then fill the block around the sleeves with water. If you DO have a leak you will see it at the bottom of the lower sleeve/block area.

Update: Checked the oil, very little water in it. Dip stick still below the fill mark after 3 months of sitting.
Going to pull the pan and look for leaks (on paper) or leak trails. Will fill the block with coolant but head is off so no pressure.
Any other diagnosis ideas are welcome. How do we look for a cracked block? Would a coolant leak cause an engine miss ? Or, are these separate problems? Thanks for the help so far.

Oh, if it is an O ring, should I buy 1 sleeve or a set? Or just replace the o rings?

lso Mr. Hay Hay Hay, if it has been in the family since 1955 it will be a Massey-Harris, not a Massey-Ferguson. Did not become Massey-Ferguson until 1958. Good little tractors, I have a 1957MH50.
