Manually setting timing on MF35

The book says set timing with a light at 450 rpm, mine will shutdown long before getting that slow, so does anyone know how to set the timing with the motor off, also so is there a dwell setting for points, I never had much luck
with point gauges.

I set the timing by ear, listen to how it sounds under a load, the main thing is how easy it starts while the engine is still hot (it takes experience to do this). You can static time it by lining up the timing marks, then with the distributor cap off, and the rotor pointing towards where the number one plug wire would be, then turn the distributor until the points open, it will be pretty close.

Tractor starts easy on 1st try everytime, dies if you try to bring the rpms down even close to idle. I rebuilt
the carb and it still does it so that's why I am looking at ignition.

What are you trying to get to idle at, if the book says 450 rpm doesn't really mean you have to let it idle that low. It won't hurt it to let it idle at 700 rpm's. Maybe the points need cleaning, maybe the condenser is going bad. Whatever you do change one thing then try it, if you change a lot of stuff at once, and it works like it used to you really don't find out what was the real problem.

If there is the slightest manifold leak on the intake side, you will never get the engine to idle at 450. I set my timing with a light for 30 degrees at 2000rpm. After replacing my manifold gasket, I can now idle the engine down to 450-475.
