Massey 231 won't move

Hi,
I have a 99' Massey Ferguson 231 that just broke in a big way. I was moving some big pine logs that we had taken down in the front yard and was pushing one to be better able to pick it up when all of a sudden it stopped dead(I didn't see the large boulder it had jammed against. Before I could get the clutch in there was a noticeable POP sound and she was dead in the water. Won't move forward or backward in any gear or high or low range. Motor still runs beautifully, no strange noises or new leaks, but she's stuck where she's at unless I hook up a tow strap to the 560. Is there any kind of shaft or pin on these tractors that may be designed to shear in order to prevent any more serious damage? Any help or advice you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated. I just finished working on the 560 and not really looking forward to tearing something else completely apart.

There is a coupler that is designed to shear. You should be able to access it by removing the round cover where the pto lever comes out of (make sure you drain a few gallons of oil from the trans/rear end before removing that cover unless you want an oil bath).

I figured I'd call the local massey dealer's service department and he also mentioned that coupler. Although he mentioned going in through the plate under the seat or the cover on the right side of the tractor. Can you also access it through the pto shaft cover? What do you have to do to remove the pto lever?

I think the dealer meant under the left hand side cover where the pto engagement lever is. Where the pto lever there is just a lever, and no other fittings on that cover? If it's just the lever just remove the bolts from that side cover, and you can get to it.

Is it that much more of a pain to just remove the seat, disconnect the linkages and pull the top cover off with an engine hoist?

You run the chance of messing up the lift linkage under the lift cover if you don't know what you are doing, then your 3 point won't correctly afterwards. It's a lot less hassle going through the side cover.
