Had a scare with the MF202 today

I was using my box blade to remove sand that accumulated in my long driveway and I stopped to talk to my nephew. Anyway, I hopped back on the tractor and started it up and it was stuck in reverse. I don't know how it happened.

So...I did a search here on this forum for "stuck in reverse" and the answer popped up. Just to remind everyone it said...shift the high low lever into the middle and remove the trans fill plug and look down in there and take a large screwdriver or pry bar and move the big gear forward until the shift lever again moves right and left as in neutral.

Holy #^%$$, that fixed it ! I will also follow this advice that he added. "Shift SLOWLY, and it will never happen again. It ain't a HURST."

How often do simple fixes like that happen? I've probably had my quota now. :D

As an OLD MF mechanic, I can tell you it's been happening for years. I even showed an MF 50 owner how to "mess" it up, then fix it again. As I've said many times, it AINT a HURST...

Thanks man, I think it was an old post of yours that I found.

The more worn out the transmission the more frequent these things seem to become. Used to happen regularly enough on my 202 that I could shift the H/L into neutral, then jiggle the gear shift back and forth as fast as I could and most times I could get it to free up. On the 35 the transmission what much tighter and although it didn't happen as often, when it did, I had to remove the filler plug and use the screwdriver method.
Now that 35 transmission resides in the 202 so I'm better all around..........unless I forget about shifting slowly.

Dieseltech, I think everyone here would agree with me that this site wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is without your expertise....Thanks!

One thing to be careful of is the threads of the gearbox filler in the cover . Don't get too enthusiastic with the screw driver or you may harm them . A bit of PVC pipe helps keep them safe .

Good tip, thanks.

It seems a piece of leather would also work, like the end of an old wide belt. This could not accidentally drop into the trans.
