Mf35 power steering problems

I’ve had my MF35 for 4 years now, and it’s avgreat machine for mowing and tedding hay. The problem, however, is that the “power” steering has never worked right. Normally, I wouldn’t be too bothered, but I fractured several bones in my hand a few months back (cow stepped on it during milking), and so cranking real hard on the wheel like I have done in the past isn’t really an option. Need to figure out a solution.

There’s two issues, seemingly interconnected. The pump, near as I can tell, is functioning, and I replaced the fluid right after I got it. However, the power assist only assists in the first 25 degrees on the wheel in either direction. After that, the pump just whines and steering is super heavy, as if manual steering is all I’ve got .

The other issue is that I experience ”death wobble” frequently, and without warning. I now just keep a foot on the back of the steering shafts to keep everything from wobbling too badly.

There’sa correlation here. The death wobble can obviously be corrected by tightening up the steering shaft adjusters on the column itself. However, if o get them to the point where wobbling stops, then I have no power steering. Conversely, if I loosen them up, I have power assist lock to lock (albeit the steering wobbles so bad it’s unuseable).

I’m almost to the point of breaking down and buying a new column. I don’t want to , but I need the tractor to work for me , and the current steering is just not cooperating with my hand. Any advice?

I found this in the service manual on p.9

Hey, thanks for the pictures. I do have type A in the reservoir. Just spitballing here, if I can adjust the shimmy completely out of the steering (which I can) but at the expense of power assist, monger it be possible that My pressure relief valve may need looked at? If so, where is it, and how do you check and adjust it? Unfortunately the tractor is over at me rental farm right now so it’s not close by to look at.

I have been in mine to fix a problem and the little plungers and spring might need replacing.
#14 and 15 in this pic.

Dont' know why the pics were upside down.

I was looking more at the replacement of the plungers and springs, not so much the type of fluid. Sorry the pic flipped.

I right clicked on the image and clicked "view image" and it appeared right side up.
