Injector pump

I have recently had the engine in my Massey 35 completely overhauled and as the mechanic was putting it back together he seems to think there is an issue with either the injector pump or injectors causing it to run lean which lead to the original problem of burning a hole in a piston. He is saying we need to have the pump and injectors tested to see which is bad and them have them rebuilt or replaced. I called a well known diesel shop and the gave me a price of $20 to test each injector and $60 to rebuild each and $175 to test the pump and $750 to rebuild it. I see where new injectors are only $20 each and the pump around $700. I also have seen a rebuild kit for the pump for as low as $11. Am I missing something here? Paying more to have everything rebuilt rather than buying all new? Should I start with replacing the injectors and a rebuild kit? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance

Hello, first of all check that you have good fuel flow from the tank tap ensuring that there is a strainer fitted to it and that the lift pump is clean and pumping satisfactorily.
In common with many things you get what you pay for. If you have your injectors and pump overhauled do not be afraid to ask what make parts are fitted. The best parts in the UK at least are genuine Delphi. The fuel injection system needs to be absolutely spot-on which is what you'll get with Delphi spares. Cheaper ones may not give the precision or the same working life.

There are 2 diesel shops here in Maine that I know of. One charges about twice as much as the other. The cheaper one is a far better shop. IMHO

I repair and test most pumps for 300-400, and do injectors too. There's a chance the injectors have the wrong tips, which are replaceable. Your mechanic has it backwards, it's not too LEAN, but could be timing, injectors, or too RICH on fuel. Diesels are opposite of gas engines, exhaust temp is coolest at low load low fuel delivery. Diesel exhaust temp goes UP with increasing fuel delivery and if the max fuel setting is too high THEN it will get too hot.

That's right, they can't be "lean". More likely
an injector is dripping or squirting a stream
onto the piston.
