MF 65 PTO will grind when trying to engage the PTO.

Hi all. I recently purchase this tractor as non runner which is now now brought back to life as of yesterday. This gal had sat for a 2-3 years outside.

My request for help is when I press the clutch down and try to engage the PTO it grinds and I'm not able to engage it. I can shut the tractor off, then engage the pto and restart the tractor and it works like it should. Could the issue be from sitting? If so do I need to run it for awhile? Or possibly have an adjustment I need to make? I tried to look thru the archives but I'm terrible at doing searches. I would greatly appreciate some assistance with this issue.

Also check the adjustment where the clutch shaft lever hits the bell housing. I had to adjust that on both of my tractors last year to engage the PTO.

Hi Dieseltech,

I finally got around to making the adjustment today that you recommended and it still grinds. I need to shutoff the tractor to engage the PTO. It is rusting in there from sitting outside for a couple of years? Not when I made the adjustment the clutch pedal was in the up posttion (not depressed) was that the correct position?

I should mention that there are two holes where the clutch pedal adjustment rod pin could be placed. This rod is using the forward most hole.

Bob NY,

Thanks for the reply. I tried what Dieseltech said I should try but didn't help. Are you asking be to adjust the clutch rod?

Dave

You could have someone work the clutch pedal while looking at the clutch from the bottom to see if there is any movement (with the engine off of course). It is possible for the pto clutch disk to be stuck because of rust also.

The clutch peddle is hinged in the back.

I think my real issue is I don't know how the 2 tier clutches should work. I never looked inside of these before.

As said I did adjust the 3 bolts to .080 and when I depress the clutch peddle all the way it barely make contact with the bar. I'll try to get some good pictures today.

thanks to all the replies.

Bob NY, PTFarmer and Dieseltech.

I hope that attached pictures will help.

1. The adjusted clutch set to .080.
2. The clutch peddle with the pin located in the rear hole. When using that hole the peddle rests on the foot rest.
3 The clutched peddle with the pin located in the forward hole. Peddle is 8" off the foot rest
4. The clutched peddle with the pin located in the forward hole. Peddle is approximately 5" off the foot rest when resistance is felt on the peddle

Does this this information make sense?

So when it's in the forward hole you have 3" of free play in the pedal which is too much. I would try taking about 1" of free play out of the pedal.
