MF 65 Intake Valve Question

Merry Christmas y'all. I've got the head off my MF 65. Had a stuck valve and a bent pushrod. I noticed that the intake valves have a second groove just below the valve stem lock groove. The second groove has what appears to be some type of seal. It's shaped like an o-ring but is square in cross section. My parts manual doesn't show this seal. The seal doesn't appear to contact anything other than the valve stem.

Can anyone tell what this item is and what it does?

Continental used the square cut O ring to seal the retainer to the stem, keeping excess oil from running down to the guide. Other engines use the same method.

Thank you! I couldn't figure out why that seal was there, but what you said makes sense. I've been searching online for a replacement part, but with no success. The one I showed in the photo was the best of the four. The other three are almost totally gone. If you have any suggestions where I might be able to purchase that part, that would be great.

try napa. GM also used valve seals like that on the 6 cyl, and v8. remember them from the 70 and 80's. would need to compare valve stem diameter's.

Go to NAPA and purchase some Umbrella Seals and use them, they will control oil better on the intake valves...

Very inexpensive..

Could you expand on that a little? What application would be the same/would fit a 65 with a Continental? My 65 gasser sucks oil into the number 3 cylinder.

I went to NAPA as suggested above. The fella I talked to wasn't able to find a part that would work, but he suggested I try Reliance Power Parts. Their web site is good, and they carry the seal. Their PN for it is S163236. However, you can only buy if you're registered with them as a dealer. But they list dealers in your area by entering your zip code. I went to the dealer nearest me, and he had the seals in stock!

You will need to measure the diameter of the valve stem, and the inside diameter of the valve spring to get the correct Umbrella type valve seals. They will look like this.

Thanks! I have to tear into the 65 soon and fix that oil issue. Thought it was a valve guide, but it happened all the sudden, so it's likely it could just be a seal. I researched it a little and I never saw that square o ring type seal in the parts listing. Adding the umbrella seal seems like an improvement.
