44 or 44 special?

Tractor serial tag is missing. New to these
tractors. Is this a staight 44 or a
special?

best way to tell is engine size 4 cyl. 6 cyl. flat head or valve in head cast wheels or pressed steel on latter ones a 44 will have a 260 ci. and the special will have a 277 ci engine you can find that on the block at the head line on the right side on the flat spot above the generator

The 44 Special came with cast wheel centers front and rear, friction hand throttle next to the steering wheel, larger brake and clutch pedals, larger hydraulic cylinder if fitted with "follow up" linkage quadrant. If gas, should be the 277 engine, dad's diesel was still the 260. Most had three point and the PTO live hand clutch too. Since the tag is gone, look near the PTO shift lever, the number is also stamped on top of the transmission case along the edge.

A 44 Special also has a heavier frame.

And a wider front axle, wider rear rims and a different cast centre for the 30 inch wheels.
