TO35 won't start backfiring out of exhast

lynchmob

I purchased a MF TO35 last week. it sat for a while and the kid i purchased it from replaced the plugs and plug wires. The coil was dead so i replaced that and rebuilt the carb, as well as place a new cap and rotor. When i try to fire it up the tractor is backfiring out of the exhast. I think a plug wire might be wrong. I know the firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2. I believe the rotor turns counter clockwise. If I am standing on the side of the tractor looking down at the distributor I believe #1 should be the upper right the way it is oriented. Can anyone help me with this. The way it is backfiring I think a wire is hooked up wrong.

Take your # 1 plug out and take the dist. cap off so you can see the rotor and put your thumb over the plug hole and crank it over(you may need some help for
that, just have them bump the starter,it will tell you rotation plus when it pushes air out of the plug hole you will know were # 1 is on the dist.(Someone could
have installed it wrong),the engine doesn't care were it is as long as the firing order is correct.

Don't guess as to rotation. Pull the distributor cap of and spin it over and watch the rotor then you will know for sure. As to where the #1 wire should be well yes when new it should have been in one set location but who knows if the distributor has been pulled and if so it could be in any of the 4 nipples. So get it to TDC with #1 and then check where the rotor is pointing. If that is where it should be as for where your #1 plus wire is then good or if you have it on the exhaust stork you could be 180 out. If 180 out just switch the wires across the cap
