MF 65 drain plug

I'm considering drilling and tapping a 1/4 NPT hole in the bottom of my rear axle to install a drain petcock to let out any water that might get in. Loosening the regular plug usually results in me unscrewing it too far an losing a bunch of oil. I don't see any reason why this can't be done. It would be a petcock that does not have wings on it like a radiator one so it wouldn't be catching on anything. What does anyone else think.

I thought about that but was thinking it will not be at the very bottom of the housing. I want to be able to get any trace of water out after sitting all winter.
