Massey 165 slow/no lift 3pt help

I have a 1969 Massey 165 multipower with a 204 Perkins. I am experiencing a slow lift on the 3 pt and also when there is a heavy implement (bush hog) it doesn't want to lift it unless it's at 2200rpm and still lifts slow. Someone has unhooked it from the factory levers and hooked it up to a remote lever. It has dual remotes for a loader but a quad remote lever block. There using the other for the 3pt. The 3pt leaks down to after being up for a few minutes. This tractor should have no problem lifting 3-3500lbs. What's wrong !?!
Any help is appreciated thanks !!

Hello,
It is more difficult to diagnose a problem when someone has modified the system. You say that you have the remotes to operate a loader. Is the loader currently fitted? If so what is the lift rate of the loader like. If the loader lift speed is satisfactory that will narrow the possibilities somewhat to the rear lift cylinder area.

Does the tractor have Pressure Control fitted to it? If you are unsure what PC is you will find that the three-point linkage lever is moved rearwards to lower the linkage on a PC tractor. If it does not have PC then the quadrant lever is moved forwards to lower the linkage. When you are trying to laise the 3pl via your remote valve ensure that the outer (DRAFT) quadrant lever is fully raised and the inner quadrant (POSITION CONTROL) is in the CONSTANT PUMPING position.
Is your 4-lever block mounted on the front of the hydraulic cover or remotely on the fender perhaps? In order to operate this type of modification there will be a valve control to shut off the internal system and switch pressurized oil to the external system which is plumbed into the lift cylinder circuit, guessing, one of the ports on the front of the hydraulic cover. When you release the 4-lever lift lever any oil in the lift circuit should be locked there. Oil can only escape if the spool in the 4-lever block is badly worn or the piston on the internal cylinder is passing oil from a scored bore, broken rings or split cylinder case. On the top of the hyd cover there are 4 13/16" spanner size nuts on studs. Do NOT slacken them but make sure that they are tight.. There is an O ring between the cylinder and cover. If any of these nuts are loose it may be leaking oil past the O ring or the cylinder may be split.
NO MF hydraulic system will stay up indefinately if the engine is not running but it is the speed of drop that can indicate a problem. With an implement fitted a full drop in 5 to 15 minutes is acceptable. If it falls within 1 to 3 minutes then there is a problem possibly as mentioned above.
Other causes of a slow lift are a blocked intake filter, badly worn pump, other internal leaks but also a badly worn control spring assembly (part of the mechanism where you attach the top link). With the DRAFT lever fully lowered is there any back and forth in the linkage? If so the linkage may be telling the pump control valve to only partly open and therefore slow down the lift speed. To test this remove the top link and attach a chain or suitable bar between your implement and the hinged pin point below the top link attachment point. This will bypass the internal linkage.
If there is an improvement this is the area that you need to focus on.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply.. no the loader is the same way when it is fitted.. it raises slow. The side mounted controls for draft and position control that are factory mounted do not work at all it is all done with the remote levers and the remote levers are mounted on top of the pump housing right below the seat area. You go back to lift the 3pt and forward to drop it. Is there a chance that internally it is unhooked from the factory levers ?

Hello,
Yes it's quite possible that the roller in the pump control lever has been removed so that the pump is continually pumping. The way that it is plumbed up means that the pump control valve does not need to move into the discharge position as it would when the linkage is lowered.
I would suggest that you drain about 1.5 gals from the transmission and remove the RH round side cover. That way you will see if the roller is fitted and whether there is any response from the quadrant levers when you move them. You will see the lever coming up from below with the roller in the top end of it (if fitted). Coming down from above is the 'vertical' lever with an adjustable knurled screw in it which makes contact with the roller. When the quadrant levers are placed in the 'lift' position the assembly should move rearwards. When the levers are lowered the assembly should move forwards. This will at least tell us if the pump valve is opening fully.

I wasn't able to remove the RH come to look
last night but I did look at things. Is
there anything that I will have to watch
out for when removing the cover or do I
just unbolt it and pill it off ? Also what
does the fast/slow lever do ? Which way is
which on it also.. thanks
