MF 285 engine rebuild

I am doing a complete rebuild on a 1982 MF 285 Perkins A4.318 and the parts kit came with a 2 piece rope seal. I have the engine completely tore down and don't see where this goes- I can't find anything in the manual either. Anybody know where this goes?

Early 318 Perkins engines have a rope rear seal, at least the 1080's here in Australia did have anyway. I'm not familiar with the 285's, as none ever came into this country as far as I know. Later engines may have come thru with a single lip type seal.
Did you also get a lip seal in your kit? If you did, I'd just bin the rope set.

Hi,
My info agrees with Evan in that all 1080 and 1085 models had a rope seal. USA-made 285's with the A4.318 and A4.318.2 engines had a black nitrile lip seal. Part number is 2418F475.

Thanks guys.
Yep, the rebuild kit came with a lip seal also and I have that already installed. I didn't know if this rope seal was used for something other than the crankshaft.

Dieseltech, unless you are describing something different, I will toss the rope seal.

David, Is there much difference between the 318 and 318.2? I presume the latter is an improved version of the former. Did they manage to cure the notorious head gasket blowing proclivities of that engine? I seem to remember Massey sort of "gave up" on that engine when they replaced the 698 with the 698T.
I have just been reading an excellent and very entertaining book by David Walker called "Inside Massey Ferguson" . He mentions the problems of the A4.318 fitted to the 1080/ 595 quite a lot. One of the funniest parts of the book though is when he talks about a tractor driver in Africa, who destroyed the engine in his 135 by replacing the dirty oil in the air cleaner with fresh new clean dry sand!
