MF 124 Baler Bale wedges

I was hoping someone could give me the dimensions of a bale wedge for tha MF 124 baler. My bales are a little loose and was hoping to get them in and see what happens.

I have cleaned out everything else, so hopefully this might be the trick.

Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony,
Sorry, don't have the dimensions of the wedges.
They should be fitted as the compressed crop will briefly follow the plunger face as it withdraws up the bale chamber. This happens before the bale weight clamps are able to cause the bale to be packed more tightly. If spring loaded 'hay dogs' are fitted, make sure that they are free and all springs are sound.

Thanks, The top Hay Dogs were all messed up, apparently hay and gunk over the last 4 decades took it toll. They were only going in about 1/2 inch. They are now clean and move freely again, thanks to chiseling out the crud. Now they go down all the way with the springs.

I was hoping you could tell me where on the bale chamber the wedges fit. I think I have only 3 choices since that where bolt holes are. I am think #2, but I have read that some people had 4 wedges in the machine. I am assuming that the wedges go from top of the chamber to the bottom in kinda a shark fin pattern if you were look straight down from the top of the baler...?

Hi Tony,
The attached photo shows the position of the wedges in a New Holland 376 of UK and European origin. Your 124 is very similar to the French made '20' of which we had one for a couple of years.
If the wedges are put in your number '1' position they will be too far forward to do any good. The tied bale and the one underconstruction will require more effort to push them back and will therefor be compressed more. Hope this helps.

Thanks. That picture is worth a thousand words. My manuals do not show anything like that. Very helpful. Looks like the wedges only "fin out" 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Guess I will make some out of Angle Iron see see what happens.

Thanks so much.
Tony

I don't recall them sticking out more than about 3/4", but that's on an NH baler. I did make some out of Locust wood, for a NH, one time, if I were doing it today, I'd get some white HDPE plastic, would last a lot better, in the environment it's working in.

My dad just bought some for our #12 baler this fall. Right now they're in a cabinet in the shed waiting to be installed. I doubt I'll remember to measure them next time I'm there, but if I think of it I may snap a few pictures w/ a tape measure.
