MF 135 reving up

I think this was discussed a little while back but I cannot find it.

135 diesel- 1st time I had used it, unknown history- seems to be in good condition.
I had been using it with a sickle bar mower for 2-3 hours. Everything working as it should. Then the motor would rev up about 250 rpms(from about 1500 to 1750) for maybe 2 second up to about 10 seconds then go back to the 1500 rpms. It did this maybe 10 times in about 15 min.

The throttle lever never moved. I do not believe the throttle linkage moved on the pump. I may have been only while going up hill but not for sure. I could not make it do it again.

Then it ran normally for about an hour more until I quit using it.

What going on?

Thanks, Greg

Possible fuel starvation, clean or replace every filter right back to
the gauze in the tank. If you are happy with the fuel flow then
unfortunately you may have a worn cam ring in the fuel pump. this
is specialist repair only.

Sounds like the fuel system is sucking air somewhere, or, as mentioned, starving for fuel. I've had a couple Perkins diesels do EXACTLY like what you're describing. In BOTH instances, the primary lift pump (fuel pump before filters) was in the process of going out. Both were repaired by replacing diaphragms in the lift pump.

I really appreciate the responses and will certainly take them into consideration.

My (sometimes ridiculous) reasoning would be that if it was fuel starvation or sucking air then the rpms would not hold extremely steady for hours and also that it would drop rpms rather than increase rpms.

Other than the 15 minutes described above- this tractor has run really smooth the few hours I have used it. It also seems to have more power than a couple of the other 135 diesels I have.

I am sure y'all know more about it than I do.

Thanks, Greg

As I said, I've had 'em to do EXACTLY as you described when the lift pump diaphragm was leaking and allowing SOME air into the system. EXACTLY as you described......

I believe I have an extra pump. That will be the first thing I change if/when it happens again.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks, Greg
