MF 165 PTO Seal

I've had a bad leak coming from my PTO and am hoping it's merely the seal. Could this be changed without splitting the tractor? What tools would I need?

Are you talking about the back end? It leaks at the spline? No, no split, and just search the archives on here for pto seal, several people did that job lately. You have a manual for that one? Any one of the MF'S? they are all about the same, biggest job is the oil coming out and going back in.

Hi,
As Tony has said there is no need to split the tractor. Drain the oil and remove the check chain bracket and retainer plate that is underneath. The PTO shaft hub is now free to be removed. All that will hold it is rust and the tightness of the big O ring around the outside. If you can fit a slide hammer onto the end of the shaft that would be perfect. Alternately fit an implement drive shaft and using a blocks of wood or similar prise the shaft out squarely. The photos show a method of removing the seal. To fit the new seal ensure that the socket or whatever you use pushes on the outside of the seal not the inner area. Fit a new O ring and grease the outside of the housing. Carefully re-engage the shaft and then fit the housing and retainer plate etc.

Thanks Tony. Yup, pretty much the biggest pain for me was refilling the hydraulic fluid into the tractor. I have a very sore elbow so it was a slight challenge.

Thanks David. That's pretty much exactly how I did it. It seems to be a good fix since as of last night. I'm going to check my fluid level this morning and see how it worked.
