Inherited FE35

I have inherited an FE35 with the 23C Diesel engine. I am reliably informed that it was running well when it was parked in a farm paddock some six years ago and hasn't been started since. My challenge is to get it running

I have drained and replaced the engine oil and new filter.

Drained the fuel tank, cleaned glass fuel bowl and gauze filter and ready to fit a new fuel filter to the fuel filter canister. Have a CD of the FE35 Manual (scanned pics are not best quality but the manual is quite comprehensive (383 pages)

Ready to change the fuel filter cartridge. Have removed plug from the bottom of the metal filter canister and undone a large capped nut on the top of the filter body which leaves an exposed thread.

Would have expected then to be able to withdraw the filter canister but it doesn't budge. The engine looks like it has been spray painted a few times and it may be just paint but I hate forcing anything. can't twist it either but canister doesn't look to be threaded.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Soon as Tony wakes up from his "sleep" from drinking all those black labels, he can answer your question. He is working on a 23c.

Sleeping alright, not from beer, but boredum. So, as far as this filter, if the bolts are out of the top and bottom, it doesn't want to fall off anyway, but it 'may' have to unscrew like a spin on filter, so tapping with a rubber mallet and twisting counterclockwise with a spin on wrench, will get it off sooner or later, probably just the old rubber gasket.
