MF 180 Differential lock

I have the cover off the rear axle tube and the pin that pushes the differential lock into mesh is stuck. Do I need to go into this any further if I can free up the sliding pin or is there a good chance that something else is frozen up farther in? It looks like if I remove the small cover for the brake I may be able to see more. Is there ay problem I might run into if I remove this? Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Phil,
We don't have a 180 in the UK but it looks to be the same as the square axle 595. Is the shaft that is stuck at the 12 o'clock position on the axle casing? The attached picture was taken from the 165 parts book but should be the same except for the pedal assembly. If you have not already done so you will find that on the outer end of the shaft is a screwed in fork. Removing this and the boot will help. If you can't make any progress freeing it then you will have to remove the axle casing. It is extremely unlikely that you will gain any access through the brake operating arm attachment point.
Removal of the axle is straight forward as long as you have the necessary lifting and safety equipment.

thanks David, The 180 is an early one(1965) with the round axle. I'm sure it is similar as far as operation, but the shaft that goes through the housing is a solid piece with a notch cut out for the actuating cam. I am assuming the wheel will need to be need to be turned while trying to engage the differential lock. We are going to put penetrating oil to it and see what happens. The short shaft in the cover was also froze up so hopefully that was the major problem. The gasket under the cover was shot so it looks like water had got onto things.

Well I got the shaft freed up in the cover but the shaft that goes into the differential is frozen solid. I think it is going to stay that way for now as it is time to prepare for cutting hay.
