There is a loud knocking in my MF 20C that goes away when I depress the clutch. If I have it right, this would not be a throw out bearing -- or something on the engine side of the clutch. If it only occurred in gear, I'd suspect something like a transmission bearing, but it also occurs in neutral.

I replaced the clutch plates, but the knocking did not go away. Any ideas?

Hi,
Firstly make sure that the knock is not the hydraulic system. Ensure that the quadrant levers are 'down' and check again.
Is the knock constant with the clutch pedal 'up'?
It is unlikely to be a clutch problem such as a release arm come loose. You would not be able to use the clutch. I would check the crankshaft end float. Remove the inspection plate from under the clutch housing and using a screw driver or similar check if the crank can be moved forwards and rearwards. If there is wear in the crank thrust washers its just possible that one of the crank webs may be hitting the block. In pressing the clutch pedal you are pushing the crank forward and clear of the fouling.

Has the tractor a dual stage clutch? At which stage does the knocking disappear, the first stage or the second?
As David suggested, try lowering the quadrant levers, to re leave to load on the hydraulic pump first. If the knocking persists, press the clutch pedal down thru the first stage (main drive), and listen for the noise. If it disappears at this point, a failed bearing in the input housing on the transmission may be the culprit.
If the noise will only disappear when the pedal is fully depressed, then a failed bearing on the transmission lower shaft at the front, could be the cause.
Advise us accordingly,
Evan.

Thanks. I'll give the quadrant levers a try. It is a dual stage, but I haven't noticed whether the knocking stops on the second stage. I'll try that also and let you know.

David,
The knock started out intermittent -- but has become more constant. It started after I got the tractor stuck and used the transmission to rock it back and forth.

Fooling around with the lift made it knock -- so I think it"s an hydraulic problem. If so, should I worry about it -- or, as my old Dad used to say -- "Drive it until it falls off"?
