I want to fit temperature gauge to a mk1 massey ferguson 65

hi all,

i have a 65 which i want to fit a temperature gauge to. i am aware that there is no space to fit it on the dash panel so i intend to make a bracket to house it somewhere below the dash panel.

my question is where do i screw the temperature sender end of the wire into? engine block, radiator, water pump?

the tractor is an industrial model which as far as i know is the exact same as a standard 65 but the engine numbers are stamped differently.

information or photos please!

as usual any and all information is greatly appreciated.

It is general practice to put them in the engine block near the top of the block were the hottest water is before it leaves the block to the radiator.
If there is no place there just get it in the block somewhere as high as you can.

Something doesn't sound right here, an MF65 no mater where it is or was made should have a spot for a temp guage on the dash, the original hole must have something else in it just now. Is this a Standard diesel? Either the head or 'thermostat housing' must have a threaded hole (that probably has a bolt neatly screwed in it) where the .. thermocouple? is suppose to thread into. You shouldn't have to invent all this, just do some detective work and restore it. I bet someone here with a big album can post some pics to help you find this stuff, we'll see....

Hello,

I am going to take 2 pics and try to post them here. 1 pic of the thermostat housing where the sender is supposed to sit, and 1 pic of the dashboard where the temp gauge is supposed to fit. This is on a MF 65 Mark I from first half of 1960.
Original placement of gauges.

I will get it done perhaps late today or tomorrow. Is that ok with you ?

its a 1959 mk1 diesel
there are three holes in the dash already all of which are filled, ammeter, oil pressure, and tachometer.

photos would be great bill if you could get them put up.
thanks for all your replies so far everyone

Hi all,
As far as Perkins engines fitted to tractors 35 upwards the temperature sender is fitted to the front of the cylinder head, either vertically or horizontally. I can't think of any other engines that have the sender in the block so I will have to disagree with Jim there. It may be a coincidence but the sender is on the same side as the fuel injection system. Have a close look around the front of the head or thermostat housing for a plug which can be removed. You may need a thread adaptor though.
My info for the 65 temp gauge unit is;
Clock hole diameter 52mm, length 1750mm, tube nut 5/8"unf. MF 881396M91, Bepco 30/174-1
The hasty photo shows the unit fitted to the front RHS of the cylinder head of my 212 MF 165.

I will go out and take a pic of my new to me MF65, I presume North American made, but some of the casting marks look just like the UK MF35 I have- looks like the Converty Catherdal spire? Or am I too romantic??? One thing for certain, 3 holes isn't common, you are missing the fuel gauge as well as a punched hole for temp, you might have an 'extra economy model'?

This dash is exactly the same as my 50 and 35, got to be close to what yours was ...once. the casting on the bell housing has the steeple thing.

Hello,

I have now taken the pics, and it is some different from the US MF 65, but I can not post them here, have no clue how. But, I would be happy to send it to your e-mail if you have such a one.

hi david,

thanks for the reply. i've looked at my engine and where you have the sender mounted and mine can't go there as there are engine studs horizontal and vertical from that point. i'll attach some photos to show.

i think the engine in mine is a 203.

hi tony,

thanks for your reply and photos.
the casting marks are the same on my engine block as yours.
my dash however is different. my father used to own a mark 2 multipower one of thes also but it had only three clocks as does my 4 cylinder massey 35. i don't know why they didn't come with temperature guages over here i'd consider them more important than an ammeter.

i'm going to upload some photos of my 65

in this photo is the point at which i suspect the temperature probe should be fitted. the bolt is just below the power steering pipes

528.jpg

this photo is of the block top where the temperature probe was fitted on davidp's 165. there are engine studs on my engine where he has his fitted

529.jpg

this is the easiest way to spot the difference between a mk1 and mk2 65. wedge between engine and gearbox. on the mark 2 the engine is cast all the way back to join the gearbox
