How do I properly time a 203 perkins?

I am in the middle of a tear down to repair grooves from a blown head gasket between #3 and #4. This is a favour for a family member and we do not have access to any manuals.

When I pulled the front cover off I took note of the notches on the gears and none of them lined up. See the chalk marks in the pic.

What is the proper process to time the crank to the cam and IP?

I believe I read that there an odd # of teeth on a gear or two and the marks only line up once in a blue moon. Have a caddy northstar engine that is that way too. Took a pic of the illistration in my book. Hope you can see what you need.

On the 203 perkins, I read somewhere that all the timing marks only line up once in every 2000 revs. So if you get one out of line you almost have to start over from scratch. HTH's lee
